A NEW community bakery in Rhyl, aiming to teach people all sorts of new skills, enjoyed its grand opening yesterday (March 7)

“Use Your Loaf” bakery is based on Abbey Street, and welcomed various representatives of Denbighshire County Council (DCC) and numerous charities to celebrate its first day of business.

Indeed, DCC chair, Councillor Alan James, and Cllr Joan Butterfield (both Rhyl West ward), Cllr Barry Mellor (Rhyl East), and former Vale of Clwyd MP Chris Ruane all attended yesterday’s unveiling.

Initially the idea of the project leader of the Foryd Community Centre, Fiona Davies, the bakery has been planned for several years, and will be open from Monday to Friday.

It will offer different types of courses on each day between Tuesday and Thursday, as well as a “community day” each Friday.

Alex Bowen, project manager, said: “We had people from organisations, charities, and the council drop in throughout the day.

“We talked about the project and its aims; they all tried some of the food, and we've had excellent feedback, both regarding the project, but also the food.

“The overwhelming feeling was of excitement, that the flexibility of the courses will be key as well as the qualifications that they gain.

“For me, I was excited to finally be able to show off the bakery, tell people about the project and show them exactly how and where it will all be.

“I was buoyed by all of the positive comments and am now definitely looking forward to evolving the ideas as we move forward.”

The bakery will give people the chance to learn how to make artisan, home-made loaves, as well as earning qualifications in food safety, allergen awareness and more.

It will run flexible 12-day courses, enabling people to come in whenever suits them, and will be open to anyone older than 16.
