A TOUCHING memorial has seen Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhyl Sixth name its science laboratories in memory of one of its ex-students who sadly passed away last summer.

Tutor David Porter and fellow Rhyl Sixth staff members wanted more than just a plaque to be mounted outside the science labs in memory of student Steven Jones, who sadly passed away from an aggressive cancer last summer.

It was suggested, then, that the labs be renamed after him: ‘The Steven Jones Laboratories’.

Steven was just months away from starting his university studies at Durham before he died at the age of 19. He was due to read physics.

Whilst studying at the Rhyl Sixth, he achieved A grades in all of his A-levels: maths, physics and chemistry.

A talented student, Steven had originally applied to study at Cambridge University.

David Porter, one of Steven’s tutors during his time at the Rhyl Sixth, said: “We wanted more than just a plaque to commemorate Steven, so we decided to rename the two science labs after him to help keep his memory alive.

“We stayed in contact whilst he was in hospital, and he used to say: ‘If there is anything I can do for your current crop of students, just let me know’. I kept emphasising to Steven to just concentrate on his own health.

“He was a top student, a pleasure to teach and he had a true passion for science. More than all this, he was a truly lovely and pleasant young man.”
