“I’M a salon owner, but I hate the beauty industry!” laughed Lorna Roythorne-Du Ross, which isn’t quite the oxymoron it might initially seem.

With eight years of experience in the industry, Lorna, owner of RDR & Coco’s Beauty Salon in Abergele, prides herself on empowering her customers and accentuating their natural beauty, rather than merely forging a clientele of clones.

“I hate the idea of women walking around, all wanting to look the same, and having these crazy treatments,” she added.

“I’m really passionate about everyone looking beautiful, feeling themselves and looking natural.”

It’s this ethos that helped make Lorna’s business a double-award-winner, being crowned ‘microblading expert of the year’ at the 2021 British Hair and Beauty Awards and ‘semi-permanent makeup specialist of the year’ at the Welsh Hair and Beauty Awards.

Having opened her first salon in Bodelwyddan’s Faenol Fawr Country Hotel eight years ago, Lorna left that behind three years later to set up Coco’s Beauty Salon.

Then, three years ago, one particular client inspired her to take the plunge into microblading, a form of semi-permanent makeup using an ultra-fine blade to create hair-like strokes to shape the eyebrows.

Lorna said: “A client who had cancer lost her eyebrows, which really affected her confidence. I really wanted to help her, so started looking for treatments and went for it.

“I hadn’t tried it before because it’s a really specialist treatment - I had to do more than 100 perfect sets of brows; my training was very intense!

“I hated the thought of just doing eyebrows for the sake of it. Once I’d met that client, it was time to do it. I love it, it’s my biggest passion.”

So much so that Lorna took lockdown as the opportune moment to merge RDR Microblading with Coco’s Beauty Salon and move from her Rhyl base to Abergele.

She ranks her award as her proudest moment in business, not least because it was based partly on customer feedback, and believes it’s a testament to her dedication to making her customers feel as good inside as they look outside.

Lorna added: “We focus on real results. Our popular Bio Sculpture nail treatments promote natural nail health and growth, our semi-permanent makeup gives a natural finish and our skin transformations ensure real results from the inside out, not just short-term solutions.

“We strive to make our incredible ladies not only look, but feel beautiful, to build their confidence and wellbeing.”
