A TENNIS club is celebrating after its women’s doubles won the first division in doubles.

Prestatyn Tennis Club’s first team received the league shield from Tennis Wales after securing the First Division North Wales League title.

There were six teams in the league, including Mold, JAB (Colwyn Bay) and Craig-y-Don, Rhos, as well as Prestatyn’s second team after it won the division two last year.

A home and away match was played against each team, which each have two pairs, with three sets played against each pair.

Teams got two points for a win and one point for a draw.

There are two divisions in the women's doubles so it's great that our second team is included in division 1 too having won Division 2 previously.

The Prestatyn first team squad includes captain Sue Armstrong, Rezi Onibere, Madelaine Cotgreave, Jane Thomas, Sue Parkin, Sarah Ash and Hilary Pullen.

They collected the league shield from the head of Tennis Wales last month.

Mrs Pullen said: “We were thrilled to win, the tennis in the first division is of a very high standard and we had some very hard-fought battles!

“It's great to have the shield back at the club again.”

It marks the end of a difficult lockdown period for Prestatyn Tennis Club which, like most sports clubs in the region, had been forced to close during the pandemic.

“It was really tough when we had to close the club but luckily tennis was one of the first sports to be allowed to open up again after lockdown,” said Ms Pullen.

“We've seen member numbers rise as people are looking for more to do locally with their families. It's great to see all the new families who have signed up in the last year enjoying themselves at the club.”

Prestatyn Tennis Club has more than 230 members, including juniors in a list of coaching programmes.
