A NEW information board and a mural are both being planned to further enhance the appearance of Prestatyn railway station.

It is hoped that the information board, which will tell visitors to the station, in both English and Welsh, about its illustrious history dating back to the mid-1800s, will be in place before the end of November.

These are the latest in a series of projects led by the award-winning Friends of Prestatyn Railway Station, following the creation of signage and a life-size sculpture of a walker named ‘Rhodri the Rambler’ on a disused platform this summer, and the planting of winter bedding plants last week.

Sherry Edwards, secretary of the group, said: “Transport for Wales have given their approval (for the information board) and we're awaiting for final consent from Network Rail; this has only been four months in the planning.

“We want to put it on two exterior walls facing the sea. I’m hoping to get it in place before the end of the month.”

A mural, something which Sherry has had in mind for the station for seven years, is also in the works to go on the bridge underpass.

The idea, Sherry said, is for it to face the platform for the trains going up the coast, with references to Prestatyn’s Roman heritage included in the design.

She added: “We will shortly be starting the process for a mural under the road bridge on the disused platform.

“I’ve been talking for a long time, going back to 2014, about a mural on the bridge underpass which faces the platform for trains going up the coast.

“We parked it while we put up the rose beds and developed the small garden, and the sign saying: ‘Welcome to Prestatyn’ and the sculpture, so really, the mural is the extension of that project on that platform.

“What I’m hoping it will do is show people walking down a hillside and also highlighting the Roman Bath House and the Roman remains (in Prestatyn).”

Prestatyn railway station was also paid a visit by ITV Wales’ Rob Shelley last week to show off their vibrant array of summer plants before they were replaced by the winter bedding.

Sherry said: “Just as we were about to start removing the summer bedding plants from the main station platform, Rob Shelley from ITV phoned and asked to come down and speak to the volunteers.

“The petunias looked really good, but they were dead underneath, so they had to come out.

“They lasted and lasted until, in the end, we had to take them out to get the winter bedding in before the ground is too hard to accept them.

“But the pansies and so on are doing really well. It won’t be as spectacular or as noticeable from the train as the summer bedding will have been, but it still gives it that splash of colour.”

Sherry is also at the forefront of a campaign to improve Prestatyn’s Coronation Gardens, with an outdoor gym and bird baths among the suggestions made by residents during a recent consultation period.
