THE Welsh Mountain Zoo is one step closer to reaching its sustainable and environmental goals.

The Colwyn Bay Zoo has created its own compost through waste material.

Along with a group of volunteers, the grounds and gardens team collected "tonnes" of fallen leaves from across the site; during the decaying process, the bags of leaves provided a home for insects, also feeding from the waste.

Now some two years later, and in recent weeks, the compost has become ready for use.

Dai Richardson, Grounds and Gardens manager at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, said: “Creating our own compost forms an important part of our sustainable drive. In doing this we are reusing tonnes of natural waste material and creating perfect quality compost which will help our greenery thrive and flourish.

“We’re really pleased with the process to date and the material we've created and are planning to increase production year on year.

"We already have some exciting plans in place to take our own compost production a step further and hope to put these plans into action towards the end of this year.”

The compost will help feed and strengthen zoo foliage, largely during planting.

The Welsh Mountain Zoo has teased that it will be hosting a Halloween event during October 23 and 31. More details are set to be released soon. Search Welsh Mountain Zoo on Facebook.
