A 70-YEAR-old woman is to take on a daring challenge alone to raise money for a St Asaph charity.

On Sunday, October 10, Gaby Barnes, who is originally from Bremen, Germany but has lived in Bodfari, Denbighshire for 36 years, is to take on the ‘wing walk’ organised by St Kentigern Hospice, which provides care and support for patients with a life-limiting condition and their families.

Starting at Breighton Airfield in Yorkshire, Gaby will move along one of the wings of a 1940s Boeing Stearman biplane, completing a number of flypasts and manoeuvres before diving from roughly 500 feet.

Gaby said: “I did a parachute jump for St Kentigern in about 2007, which was great. I have a few more butterflies (now) but I think that’s only because I’m older!

“But I’m still looking forward to it; I’ve always fancied doing stuff like this. It should be great fun - one of my friends said: ‘Can I sponsor you not to do it?!’.

“I know quite a lot of people who have had ended up in St Kentigern. It is a great institution.

“If somebody is extremely ill and possibly dying soon, they can go in for respite care, then they give the end of life care when someone is dying, so they look after them to the end.

“They are very, very good and caring. They do a fantastic job, so it is a very worthwhile cause.

“Of course, this last year with the shops being reduced or closed, they really need a lot of finance, so I thought I might as well do it for them. And I get the fun of doing this!"

Gaby has set herself a £1,000 target for the wing walk challenge and recently passed the £800 mark. To add to her total, you can donate by visiting: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/gaby-barneswingwalk.
