THE clinical staff at St Kentigern Hospice in St Asaph have entered the brave new world of paperless documentation for clinical records through the introduction of their new CHAI (Connected Healthcare Administration Interface) system.

The system was developed initially by Bangor University and is now owned by the company Scienap (‘Science & Engineering Applications’), based in Bangor.

Consultant nurse Dinah Hickish said: “At the onset of introducing the idea to the team, nursing staff had many anxieties – losing their pen and paper, working a computer for starters, all very scary.

“However, the first user to enter a patient onto the system said: ‘My goodness; it’s so easy – just like ordering a pair of jeans, you just don’t get the jeans at the end of it!”

St Kentigern is the first hospice in Wales to be going completely paperless, using a handheld digital documentation system, for all their clinical records.

The system’s greatest benefit is that nurses have 25 per cent more time available for direct patient care.

St Kentigern Hospice opened its doors again in 2020 following a refurbishment increasing the number of beds available from 8 to 12.
