AN MP has welcomed the decision for the SkyFlyer ride to take off.

Proposals to build the ride, which will take riders 400ft into the air on board a gondola on a 15m platform, was granted for approval at Denbighshire County Council’s Planning Committee last Wednesday.

There was 18 votes in favour of the attraction. No councillors abstained.

Sean Taylor, owner and founder of Zip World, is behind the attraction that will be built on the former Sun Centre site in Rhyl.

Welcoming the decision, Dr James Davies, MP for Vale of Clwyd, said: "Like many seaside towns, Rhyl has sadly lost a good number of its attractions over the years. If we are to have the best chance of returning it to its former glory then we need to ensure that there are quality, exciting attractions that will encourage people to travel here to visit.

“When the original Sun Centre opened, it really put Rhyl on the map and the plans that Sean Taylor has revealed could prove to be just as successful. The Skyflyer is just phase one of their proposals.

“Zip World has a successful track record in providing attractions that people across North Wales, and indeed throughout the UK, are extremely keen to try out and I am confident that the attractions they have planned for Rhyl will be instrumental in restoring the town.

“I appreciate some local concerns over the development, but it should be reassuring that approval for the Skyflyer is subject to a range of planning conditions to control the impacts on visual amenity, residential amenity and ecology.”
