DEDICATED fundraisers tackled the renowned Welsh 3000s challenge and 15 peaks over 3000 feet in memory of Rhyl hillwalking enthusiast Duncan Macauley.

Despite tough weather conditions, participants scaled all 15 of Snowdonia's 3000 ft plus peaks. [Some group headed off separately down various paths].

Involved in the challenge was Paul Fairhurst and Julie Starling, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) arrhythmia specialist and director of Keep the Beats - part of Awyr Las, the North Wales NHS Charity.

Julie said: "The Welsh 3000s, including all paths on Snowdon and Cadair Idris, in memory of Duncan went amazingly well, despite the rain and lack of visibility. It was such a fantastic event to be part of and I think it’s helped lots of people on different levels, come to terms with the grief felt when someone close to you dies suddenly and unexpectedly.

"I'd like to say a massive thank you to Paul for arranging this event and huge respect to everyone for their dedication, motivation, passion and drive despite the weather to get the job done in memory of Duncan."

On April 5 2020, Duncan had been enjoying the early morning sunrise on Graig Fawr (Meliden) with his friend Paul and hiking partner Alun Lloyd.

Duncan, of Rhyl, described as a hard working family man, took ill during the walk and collapsed. The emergency services were called and CPR commenced, but despite everyone’s best efforts Duncan, 53, passed away on the hill.

Money raised through the challenge, held on August 21, will go towards installing community defibrillators. Online more than £7,000 has been raised.

Julie added: "Unfortunately not all CPR attempts are successful as it depends on the cause of the cardiac arrest, but by doing CPR Paul and Alun, gave Duncan the best possible chance of survival."

Paul said the event had the blessing of Duncan’s wife Liz and sons Kyle and Sam.

Julie added: "The North Wales partnership has placed over 500 defibrillators in the community within the last three year and that’s all thanks to money raised by our community. To date six defibrillators have been place in the community thanks to Duncan, but through Paul, Alun and Garry's efforts the aim is to raise funds for at least two more."
