AN MP WANTS to see a NHS App being used as Covid-19 passport in England to be introduced in Wales as soon as possible.

From May 17, those wanting to travel overseas in England have been able to use the NHS App as a Covid-19 passport.

Dr James Davies, MP for Vale of Clwyd, questioned Nadhim Zahawi, covid vaccine minister, over its availability to those registered with a GP in Wales.

In the House of Commons, he said: "When does my hon. friend anticipate that the NHS smartphone app will be enabled to allow those in Wales to demonstrate their covid vaccination status? Further to that, does he expect that other features of the app, such as the ability to book GP appointments, to order prescriptions and to view notes will also be enabled in Wales?”

The minister informed Dr Davies the UK Government is working closely with the Welsh Government to “enable the integration of Welsh citizens’ data with the NHS app, NHS.uk, for the purpose of Covid status certification, including undertaking the required scoping and impact assessment that will enable us to set out a detailed timeline for the delivery of that integration."

People can obtain a certificate in Wales that shows the full course of the vaccine has been had.

It can take up to 10 working days for a certificate to arrive.

Dr Davies said: "The electronic vaccine passport has proved popular in England since its launch, allowing people to prove their vaccination status in a quick and convenient way if required for international travel.

"It is an integral tool in the ongoing battle to provide freedoms for travel to 'green list' countries, while keeping Covid cases low.

"It is important that it is introduced in Wales as soon as possible.”

From Monday, May 24, vaccination status certificates are available for people in Wales who have had two doses of their vaccination and need to urgently travel to a country that requires covid vaccination proof.

The Welsh Government confirmed they were working with the UK Government to enable Welsh citizens to use the NHS App to show their vaccination status.

"This will be available shortly", a spokesperson said.

People are asked not to request a vaccination certificate from their GP or vaccination centre.
