A SPORTS analyst from Prestatyn has moved to the top tier of English union rugby.

Sam Jones, known as ‘Statman Sam’, will provide his expertise to Wasps RFC following a four-year stint at Colwyn Bay club RGC 1404.

Mr Jones, a former Rhyl RFC player, said: “I have loved my time at RGC, and it has been a privilege to work for my home region plus of course that National Cup win. RGC is full of great people and I have been lucky to make some friends for life.”

The Wasps, based in Coventry, are currently 9th in the Premiership Rugby table amongst some of rugby’s best-known teams such as the Exeter Chiefs and Harlequins.

Josh Leach, RGC performance manager, said: “Sam’s progression is particularly pleasing as he is a North Walian who played for Rhyl RFC through the years. We as as a development region have the purpose of creating a pathway for players, coaches and support staff to progress into more senior roles within the professional game, and we continue to grow that number.”

RGC, which plays in the Welsh Premier Division, said it is now looking to recruit for its head analyst role with the job being advertised in due course.

An RGC club statement said: “Statman Sam has been with RGC for the past four-and-a-half years, and he leaves with some great memories.

“With former coaching staff now with Wales Women, Bath, Worcester Warriors, Pau in France, Salford Red Devils and Wasps that list is looking even more impressive.

“We wish Statman Sam all the best, and look forward to welcoming him back to RGC without his camera and laptop.”
