A CHILDREN’S novel that follows a girl’s adventure through Rhyl has been nominated for a national award.

Helynt (#Trouble) follows Rachel as she misses the bus to school and decides to go on an adventure in the town of Rhyl. The bailiffs have taken her father’s car, and she finds herself in a seaside nightclub. She is also bullied because of her disability.

The book, written by Rebecca Roberts, mum-of-two from Prestatyn, has been nominated for the Tir na n-Og (Land of the Young) Awards, an annual children's literary awards in Wales.

Mrs Roberts, translator, said: “#Helynt is my first novel for young people, and I had no idea that the response would be so favourable. I never expected it to be shortlisted for the Tir Na Nog Award.

“I'm very proud of #Helynt and the story is important to me, so it's really nice to think that the judges consider the book worthy of standing alongside works by authors others so highly regarded.

“I am very grateful to Gwasg Carreg Gwalch for publishing the novel, and extremely proud to be one of the writers of the press.”

The Tir na n-Og Awards, established in 1976, are named after an otherworldly realm in Irish mythology.

They are presented by the Books Council of Wales to the best books published during the preceding calendar year.
