£517,000 for crime prevention interventions and to improve parking in West Rhyl

Last year Denbighshire County Council, The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, North Wales Police and Clwyd Alyn Housing, made a successful bid to the Home Office Safer Streets Fund and were allocated £517,000.

The Safer Streets initiative has been put in place to design and deliver crime prevention interventions to reduce acquisitive crime including vehicle crime and robbery and make residents in West Rhyl feel safer in their community.

Residents were invited to get involved with the initiative as ‘Community Champions’ and these individuals have been working with Denbighshire County Council and partners, highlighting a number of issues within West Rhyl.

Concerns about multiple vehicles parking on pavements and across junctions around the Gerddi Heulwen green space have been reported on numerous occasions as causing hazardous obstruction, raising serious concern for pedestrians and road users in regard to safety, as well as being potential targets for vehicle crime.

The council will now be installing 106 bollards in response.

Cllr Mark Yong, lead member for Planning, Public Protection and Safer Communities, said: “This is a great example of how the community champions scheme will benefit West Rhyl.

"We are grateful that so many people are passionate about their local area because it helps us understand what the concerns are within the community and enable us to continue to make improvements to these areas."

The bollards will be stainless steel with a red reflective strip at the top to conform to Highways Specification and are in keeping with the surrounding area.

Following a successful tender process, the Council has appointed St Asaph firm KM Contractors Ltd to undertake the installation of the bollards.

Works will commence on site mid-March and be completed by the end of the month.
