FURTHER ‘parklets’ - described as raised seating areas - are set to be introduced in Prestatyn.

The use of some parking bays in the High Street will be temporary restricted to allow the street furniture to be installed.

A public notice, featured in the Journal, states: “Denbighshire County Council has made an order which will temporarily suspend the use of certain parking bay located on High Street Prestatyn.

“The reason for the suspension is to facilitate placement of a raised seating area within the parking bays by Denbighshire County Council Traffic Section.

“Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the period of restriction.”

The order came into force on Monday, February 1. Works are expected to last until June 2 2021.

The small public pavement extensions are being implemented in response to the pandemic.

The scheme is suppose to allow space for hospitality businesses to place outdoor seating for customers. Denbighshire County Council (DCC) says the street furniture also helps widen the footway and helps people follow social distancing rules.

The first parklet that arrived near to Hays Travel Prestatyn attracted mixed views from residents.

It has since disappeared.

Cllr Paul Penlington, of Prestatyn North, said at the time: “Most elected members in Prestatyn knew nothing about this until it suddenly appeared on the High Street.

“Having questioned Denbighshire County Council Highways they tell me it was approved by town centre ward members and will be a seating area for an adjacent catering business to enable social distancing.

“Personally I think it is unsightly and a potential trip hazard.

“I doubt many people will ever choose to sit in the road at a busy junction, especially in this monstrosity.

“It is an ill thought out waste of public money that could have been better spent elsewhere.”

The next two parklets are set to be created outside Kim’s Kitchen and The Hideaway.

A spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: “The first parklet has been removed and we are exploring additional options to improve the appearance of the scheme.

"Before any further parklets are introduced  we will undertake further engagement with the local members and Prestatyn Town Council.”
