SITES for a customs and freight checking facility for international traffic arriving at Holyhead have been identified, according to Virginia Crosbie, MP for Anglesey.

The proposed arrangement could create 120 jobs.

The Government had confirmed it will not be purchasing the Road King site at Parc Cybi in Holyhead. The site had been proposed for use as a customs and freight checking facility given the need for substantial new port infrastructure following the UK’s departure from the EU.

But following a commitment to Ms Crosbie, the Government has agreed to use the opportunity to create jobs on Anglesey. Its representatives met Road King in the autumn. Following that meeting both HMRC and the Welsh Government committed to undertake viability assessments of the Road King site along with other locations in the area.

Ms Crosbie said: “Investigations by both Welsh and UK Governments have established there is no single site immediately available in Holyhead that is big enough to support both functions. This means that the operations will need to be split over multiple sites.

“I am pleased alternative facilities more suited to the requirements have been identified locally. I hope to receive confirmation soon that work will go ahead resulting in the creation of over 120 new jobs in Holyhead.

“As a result of today’s announcement I hope that Road King will be able to remain open without loss of jobs. Looking into 2021 and beyond, Road King could be in a unique position to offer an established complimentary service to the other freight and logistics operations.”
