A HERD of calves was killed during an accidental fire at a farm in Bodelwyddan.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent four crews to the blaze at Pengwern Farm on Nant y Faenol just before 8pm on Tuesday, December 1.

There was 100 per cent damage caused to the brick building and 20 calves died in the incident.

It is understood that the fire was discovered quickly, however due to the livestock barn being self-contained it could not be stopped.

No danger was posed to people on the site.

A fire service spokesperson said: “We were called to a livestock barn fire on Nant y Faenol Road in Bodelwyddan at 7.49pm.

“Four of our appliances attended and crews used two hose reel jets and two main jets in tackling the fire.

“There was 100 per cent damage to the barn and 20 calves died in the incident.

"The stop was called in at 10.52pm

“The cause was accidental.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
