A man charged with a number of sexual offences has appeared at North and West Cumbria Magistrates' Court.

David John Mawdsley, 45, of Lowther Street, Carlisle, appeared from police custody and pleaded guilty to six offences, including two charges that between November 18 and 20 in Carlisle he caused/incited a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.

A further two charges from the same dates are that he attempted to engage in sexual communication with a child for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification.

He also faces two charges that on the same dates in Carlisle he breached an interim sexual harm prevention order made by Bolton Crown Court on March 21, 2018.

He is alleged to have attempted to make contact with a girl aged under 16, when prohibited from doing so by the order.

Prosecutor George Shelley told the court Mawdsley was confronted by members of a vigilante group known as Confronted and Caught in the city centre.

A member of the group made a citizen's arrest on Lowther Street and he was subsequently arrested by police.

The court was told video footage of the incident was made by this paedophile group, and they put video footage of the incident on Facebook. Video images made by them were handed to the police.

Mawdsley will appear on January 4, 2021 at Carlisle Crown Court for sentencing.
