SHOPPERS have helped an award-winning gardening community group to receive almost £1,250.

Denbigh in Bloom (DIB) was awarded the sum as part of the Co-op Local Causes scheme, in which the store’s members can choose a community group to receive 2p of every £1 they spend.

The group was named the best small town by Wales in Bloom last year for its work around Denbigh, such as raised planters and baskets on the High Street and roundabouts, however it has been held up this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Volunteers now hope the funding will jump start new projects around the town in 2021.

“We didn’t expect to receive anywhere close to the amount we have, and are incredibly grateful,” said DIB chair Lyndsey Tasker.

“Covid-19 halted much of our work this year and both Wales and Britain in Bloom competitions were cancelled.

“Our group of volunteers used their one hour of daily outdoor exercise to tend to our existing projects. They litterpicked, weeded, pruned and planted.

“Everyone can be assured the money will be spent wisely for the benefit of the whole community.”
