CHILDREN at a primary school in Abergele are getting into the I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! spirit by taking part in daily trials of their own.

Ysgol Glan Gele, based in the town where Gwrych Castle is hosting the ITV show for its 20th series, is encouraging its Foundation Phase pupils to design, create and complete their own trials on a daily basis for the next three weeks while I'm A Celeb is on.

From the 'Pond Of Doom' to the 'Trim Trail of Terror' and 'The Giant Spider Web', the kids have been keeping themselves active and having fun, all the while taking inspiration from the huge ITV show which has landed right on their doorstep.

Commenting, Ysgol Glan Gele headteacher, Julia Buckley Jones, said: "Having I’m A Celebrity in Abergele this year provides a massive learning opportunity for our school to engage in something relevant to the context of our locality.

"We have fantastic Outdoor Learning areas in the school which we use to inspire pupils. Our Outdoor Learning Mentors are using the I’m a Celebrity energy to challenge pupils to investigate and reflect on events happening within Gwrych Castle.

"We produced an infant version of I’m a Celebrity, complete with our own gruesome challenges for the children to complete. These include taste challenges, bug infestations and agility trials. Teaching is currently overshadowed by the pandemic, however we strive to provide children with fun experiences to lighten the mood and enhance their learning."

Outdoor Learning mentor Anglea Casson said: "Outdoor learning is a key part of the curriculum here at Ysgol Glan Gele, where the children have access to Forest Schools, Beach Schools and a range of outdoor opportunities. With Ant and Dec being in the local area, it has given us the perfect opportunity to set the children some trials to complete in school.

"This has proved a great stimulus to enhance the children’s interests in the outdoors and provide them with a real life, authentic context to their learning.”

Ysgol Glan Gele have already uploaded a video of some of the trials to the school's YouTube page here.
