FREE golf is being offered to members unable to use their own club due to lockdown.

The offer is being run by certain courses across Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire.

Due to local lockdown restrictions, there are currently members paying full-time fees but unable to practice golf at their home club.

The initiative allows members to use other courses as a form of exercise, which can help with mental health given the present circumstances.

Stuart Runcie, PGA Golf Professional at Abergele Golf Club, said: "This year has been a challenge for all golf clubs in North Wales.

"Overall we’ve seen an increase in people wanting to play golf which is great, but with these new lockdown conditions it’s incredibly difficult when you feel like you can’t support your own members – people who have been playing on a daily basis at the club for years.

"Through partnering with local golf clubs, this scheme has meant that we’re able to help each other throughout this difficult time, and most importantly, that those members struggling to play at the home clubs now have options to be playing golf."

The offer works, for example, if a member lives in Denbighshire and cannot go to their home club of Abergele, they will be able to play at Rhuddlan, St Melyd or Prestatyn for free. Normally there would be a green fee charge.

A spokesperson for Abergele Golf Club added: "The sense of camaraderie around this is great. We are competing businesses, but have put golf members health and mental wellbeing across North Wales first during this time."

Clubs included in the initiative are:

  • Abergele Golf Club
  • Rhuddlan Golf Club
  • Prestatyn Golf Club
  • Denbigh Golf Club
  • Northop Golf Club
  • St Melyd Golf Club and Holywell Golf Club.

There’s no end date but the scheme will be reviewed as Covid-19 guidelines are updated.

To take advantage of the offer, Members need to confirm details with their home club, take their membership ID and book in at the club they would like to play at, within the county they live within.

Abergele Golf Club is currently running an offer where anyone, named Ant and Dec, can take advantage of a free round.

The site, which is closely located to Gwrych Castle - the filming location for this year's Gwrych Castle - is running the offer until Monday, November 2.
