AN YSGOL Glan Morfa pupil has not just gone one extra mile, but ten, in memory of his 'taidy'.

Despite aiming to raise £100 on a 30-mile cycle, eight-year-old Jesse Williams' 40-mile ride has netted £1,475 for the Stroke Ward at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Jesse extended the challenge along the coast in Conwy and Denbighshire to thank the ward for the care of his grandfather Garry Williams, who died in November, and will now be able to provide the ward with a £1,000 Sara Stedy walking aid - as well as games to help retrain coordination.

Carina Williams, Jesse's mum, said: "We're extremely proud of Jesse. He’s always finding ways of pushing himself and really wanted to do something to raise money and we wanted to give something back to the Stroke Ward.

"Jesse’s taidy sadly passed away in November last year and his nana Pat Williams suffered a stroke a few months later and she is now doing well at home. He kept saying his taidy was with him doing the 40 miles and would be laughing at how sore they all were afterward."

Jesse started from his home in Abergele along the coast towards Llandudno and around the Great Orme before adding a detour to Rhyl and back then he went over to Rhyl and back to finish line at Pensarn Train Station.

Taking on the challenge with his father Gareth Williams, his uncle Paul Cowdell and cousin Harrison Cowdell, Jesse was greeted by about 40 socially distancing people at the Pensarn Train station finish line after four hours and 36 minutes.

Mrs Williams added: "Our family and friends came out to support him at the finish line. It was all a surprise so he did get very overwhelmed.

"There were close to 40 and then there were also members of the public who stayed on the bridge who cheered also.

"His nana met him at the finish line too. It was an emotional day."
