CLWYD WEST MS Darren Millar says he is 'glad action is being taken' after two bikes belonging to NHS staff were stolen from outside a hospital earlier this month.

The call for better security was made after the bicycles were stolen from outside Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan.

A letter from BCUHB Chairman Mark Polin, shown to The Journal by Mr Millar, stated that "immediate measures" have been taken on site.

The letter added that "increased police presence" has been introduced at the hospital and that "more frequents security patrols" were taking place around the bicycle storage area.

Furthermore, the letter stated: "Since Friday, May 15, we have been offering staff a temporary secure storage solution, making use of portable storage unit on site that is not currently being used.

"Signage was put up in the bicycle storage area advising staff to contact security who now provide access to this locked unit.

"The Health Board encourage staff to cycle to work, particularly at this very difficult time and I can confirm that a longer-term storage solution is being investigated. A review of additional security requirements is also being completed."

Many others had also raised the issue following the thefts, including Abergele and Pensarn ward councillor Allan Hunter, who was concerned over the "very little" amount of security on site where bikes were parked.

Commenting on the letter he received confirming that the issue was being addressed by BCUHB, Darren Millar MS said: "I'm glad that the Health Board have taken this matter seriously and that action is being taken to minimise the risk of staff bikes being stolen."
