A TOWN Councillor is calling for an 'inside secure area' to be introduced for hospital staff to park their bikes after two have been stolen since the start of May.

The first stolen from Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan was a red, white and silver Boardman bike on Tuesday May 5.

The second - a white and grey hybrid bike, was reported stolen just a few days after.

After a recent visit to the hospital A&E department, Abergele & Pensarn ward councillor, Alan Hunter, noticed there was “very little security” for bikes parked at the site.

He is now pushing for a safer inside or “fenced off” area to be introduced for staff to park their bikes whilst they work.

Cllr Hunter said: “I parked close to the cycle park area and noticed these bikes had good quality cable locks, but to a professional thief with cutters they’d be gone in seconds.

“With the additional stressful working conditions at the hospital at the moment the hard working staff shouldn’t have to be worrying about things like this. They need some better security for their bikes.“With the growing emphasis on need to cycle and walk to work l’d like BCUHB to consider how they can provide safer storage either inside their building or by having a secure fenced off compound.

“There are Some very good locks and chains on the market but to a determined thief they are only a deterrent. Some of the bikes I saw at the hospital looked very expensive so would be very attractive to the thieves.”

After hearing of the theft of the two bicycles, Cllr Hunter has contacted Darren Millar AM to ask if he could raise the issue in The Senedd.
