THE mystery yarn bomber behind these colourful crochet creations has been revealed.

Rachel Williamson, who has been knitting for 50 years, has been creating rainbow and vibrant coloured hats for postboxes during the lockdown - much to the delight of residents.

Reader John Newsome snapped a picture of one of Rachel’s decorative hats on Highfield Park.

Number eight!

The Journal put out an appeal for the secret yarn bomber to come forward, and fortunately - Rachel answered our plea.

A total of 10 hats for postboxes have now been crocheted.

“I’ve always found yarn bombing fascinating,” Rachel said.

“I have been doing one a day.

“It started when I saw the queue to Rowlands Chemist, on the Coast Road in Rhyl. Everyone looked so sad.

"So the first one I did went on the corner of Lynton Walk a couple of days later. I decided to crochet a rainbow with bright colours and a bit of sparkle to hopefully cheer people up in the queue.”

Rachel, who goes out early morning or late at night to decorate the postboxes with her sister Ruth, has been sharing her creations on Facebook.

Creation number 10

“I have been blown away by the reaction,” she said.

“A lot of people were talking about it - all positive. I was even aware of someone taking pictures of their children standing next to the postboxes to put them in their scrap books, and families going out for walks to see how many they could find.

“The response has been fantastic.”

Rachel has been learning to crochet for four years.

She added: “I am still learning. I am sure those who have been doing them for longer would say they are not perfect close up.

“I have had help from family members.

“It has been lovely doing something positive in uncertain times.”

To show their thanks, Rhyl Royal Mail Sports and Social club delivered flowers to Rachel to thank her for brightening their days.

A very British creation

"They were not expected at all, but were a lovely surprise that made my day,” Rachel said.

“Thank you very much to Royal Mail,

“I have been made aware there is 36 postboxes in Rhyl.

“I don’t know if I am going to do them all, but they look naked now if I see them without a cover!”
