Ruthin primestock sale - March 3

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,900 prime hoggets to 306ppk / £132, 132 cull ewes and rams to £140, and eight prime heifers to £1,233.10.

Old season lambs:

A total of 1,900 hoggs forward met with a flying trade, returning an overall average of 2.43ppk.

55kg hoggs from DAP Jones, Bryn Ibod hit the top price per head of £132!

There were closely followed by a pen from A O Roberts & Partners, Hendre Isaf at £129/head.

Mrs C Evans, Tan y Gaer’s Texel cross ewe lambs, weighing in at 41.5kg, achieved the top ppk of £3.06 per kilo!

Light lambs were a little easier at a £2.19 average, but a combination of 1,100 mediums and heavy lambs returned an overall average of £2.47, or £109/head.

Less entries were around due to lambing, resulting in an average of £79.

The top price per kilo was achieved by HJ&FJ Williams, Maes Gadfa with a 21 month Lim heifer weighing 470kg at 2.315ppk.

Top price was achieved by MacCarter Farms, with a 23 month Lim heifer weighing 540kg making £1223.10.

Overall average 2.143ppk.

St Asaph livestock market - February 27

OLD season lambs (1,693):

A seasonal entry also contained a large amount of hill bred hoggs.

Trade was fantastic for the week, with one vendor’s consignment averaging 293.44p/kg.

The large hoggs were an exceptional trade too!

THERE was less beef about with demand outstripping supply resulting in a fast trade.

The cull cow trade was still on fire.

Hoggets and ewes continued to meet excellent demand.

Bryncir prize store sale - February 24

THERE was a good entry of 265 store cattle, which attracted plenty of buyers.

This ensured a splendid trade which resulted in the whole sale average of £980.

Winning the D R Jones Memorial Trophy was G G Williams & Sons, Bron

Fedw Isaf with a smart 16 month old Lim X Hfr, which went on to sell for

£1100.

THERE was no let-up in cattle trade as many buyers went home empty handed again.

All types and ages were in demand.

There was a very fast trade on the barrens, which were in demand.

A 79 month Simmental cow weighing 630kg achieved 151ppk.

A 32 month Hereford cow weighing 620kg achieved 147ppk.

A 139 month Lim cow weighing 655kg achieved 145ppk.

A 35 month Hereford cow weighing 640kg achieved 1.28ppk.

A 185 month Belgian Blue weighing 695kg achieved 127ppk.

There was a very good show of calves with an entry of 92 on the day and a full ringside of buyers.

Welshpool February store cattle sale - February 24

WITH a tremendous show of cattle forward at the end of February sale at Welshpool Smithfield, trade was on fire especially considering the fat trade, which resulted in a full compliment of buyers competing well.

To be fair the cattle forward were, on the whole, better than that presented in January and the resulting trade was testament to the quality that was on offer.

Averages: 218pkg for steers and 207.58ppkg for heifers, and a small number of bulls at 214ppkg.
