A PENSIONER may think twice about visiting his local pub in Denbigh after being abused by a group of youths.

Robert Arfon Price, 81, was walking home from The Railway at 10pm on Monday after watching Liverpool FC play as he has done for the last 60 years.

He passed a group of youths near the Plas Pigot Club and did not think much of it until he heard “pitter patter” behind him.

Mr Price said he turned and saw a girl aged about 14-years-old crouching behind him. She then stood back and threw a “reasonably sized stone” at him as two other youths recorded the incident on their phones.

The retiree said he heard the rock “whoosh” past his head before a barrage of insults and noises as he attempted to chase the youths away.

“I don’t go out very often but every fortnight or so I will go to the pub to watch the football with my pals,” he said.

“It is my little joy and I have thought twice about going now, but I don’t want to let this stop my little joy.

“The road is not well lit so you can’t see something like a stone coming, so it could be nasty.

“I may be 81 but I’m not in bad shape - it could have happened to someone more frail.”

The couple were visited by a North Wales Police officer who said the force had received reports from a number of other victims of anti-social behaviour by youths in the town.

Mr Price’s wife, Jenny, 68, from Denbigh, said: “As a family we are always concerned about Robert’s safety when he goes out.

“When we heard about this I was aghast; I grew up in Denbigh and I have never known anything like it.

“It is dark in places in the town so it would be difficult for the police but if this becomes more of an issue then something needs to be done.

A North Wales Police spokesperson said: “We received a report on Tuesday, February 25 that a man had been harassed by youths as he walked home in Denbigh.

“It started by the Plas Pigot and continued down the path.

"The incident is being investigated by a member of the investigating teams unit.
