A WOMAN who had been “bad-mouthing” Anglesey’s MP on social media had an "awkward moment" when the latter rescued her from Storm Dennis.

On Sunday afternoon, Siobhan Davies was caught up in 90mph winds near Rhosneigr. She decided to flag down a car for help and later surprised to later discover that it was Anglesey MP Virginia Crosbie who had stopped to give her a lift.

Plaid Cymru supporter Ms Davies, tweeted: "So. Awkward moment. I have bad-mouthed our Ynys Môn Tory MP Virginia Crosbie so many times on sm (social media).

"And then tonight, in gale force winds, when I thumbed a random car down for a lift home - who stopped? Yup. The woman herself. Oops. Think she’ll friend me on Facebook?

Ms Davies added that she intended to apologise to the MP and says she is "eternally grateful" to both Mrs Crosbie and her husband for helping her get "home safe and warm".

Mrs Crosbie says she was on her way back from a meeting to bring people from the local business community together, when she spotted Ms Davies.

"She was barely able to stand-up because the wind was so strong, so I decided to lend some support to make sure she got home safe," The MP said.

"I don't think she had realised who I was at first, but once she asked me what my name was and I told her, she was shocked. Coming out after that and admitting to having posted abuse online was very brave and very impressive of Siobhan."

Mrs Crosbie was elected to represent Anglesey as the island's MP in December 2019, in place of long-serving Albert Owen who stepped down.

She beat Labour's Mary Roberts to become Anglesey's first Conservative MP to be elected since 1987.

However, it wasn't all plain sailing for Mrs Crosbie. Just last week, she spoke in the House of Commons and told of how she had been subjected to "significant online abuse, intimidation and threats".

She says that, she was one of the MP's who received the most abuse during her election campaign.

Mrs Crosbie added: "Social media, Twitter in particular, has become a platform for corrosive abuse. That's why I'm fully supportive of the Online Harms Bill which is being proposed.

"In my role as Anglesey's MP, I'm aiming to help everyone, regardless of what parties they support. The incident with Siobhan just goes to show that. We should always treat others the way we like to be treated and think before we speak."
