BANGOR store workers and customers put their heart into raising £1500 for a lifesaving machine.

Staff at the city's B&Q have been working with the Hand on Heart charity, in a nationwide initiative, to provide a defibrillator in every store.

A defibrillator is a machine which can be used to save lives in cases of cardiac arrest.

The equipment sends a high energy electric shock through the heart helping it to return to its normal state.

Now, thanks to fundraising efforts, the home improvement and retail store on Caernarfon Road has its own machine.

The money for the equipment was raised through a variety of activities from tombolas, guess the name of teddy, cake and bake sales and raffles from November through to Christmas.

Mark Dibb, store manager, said: "It gives me great pleasure to announce that with the support of our customers, we have installed a defibrillator in our Bangor store.

"I'd like to say a huge thank you to all our customers for helping us achieve this.

"Cardiac arrest is the UK's biggest cause of death with over 140,000 deaths each year. Chances of survival rise from just 5% to over 80% when a defibrillator is used.

"We are situated on Caernarfon Road, which is a busy road with shoppers and motorists, so it seemed appropriate that we should have one in our store."
