A LLANDUDNO school, which sells eggs, hopes to break through the 100,000 sales barrier in 2020.

Ysgol San Sior, which keeps a flock of chickens, is the only school registered to sell eggs in Wales and  is recorded as a packing station.

Since it started the initiative in 2014 the school has sold almost 89, 426 eggs.

Ian Jones, the head teacher said: “The initiative has been hugely successful, and we hope to break through the 100,000 eggs barrier in 2020.”

“To mark the 100,000 sale we plan to give the purchaser of the golden egg £100 which from the funds we have generated from our sales.”

The school also sells honey from its 10 beehives and chutney made by the pupils.

Ian added: “Our eco enterprises have proven to be successful but they haven’t been without their pitfalls. It takes time, effort and perseverance to achieve what we have, as well as a fair amount of paperwork.

“Thousands of eggs are produced each year. We are grateful to Bodnant Welsh Food Centre and Poynton’s Butchers for their support in selling our eggs.

“We invest the funds in other eco projects and currently have 10 beehives in our apiary, and hope to double our honey production in 2020. We sell the honey in Conwy Honey Fair.

“Funds from these projects has also allowed us to improve the outside learning environment for our children. The school gardens have been judged as the Best School gardens in Wales by Wales in Bloom each year for the last three years.”

He added: “We sell Chinese Pheasant eggs on eBay and use the apples from our orchard to make the tastiest chutney.”
