A DEDICATED player has celebrated her 90th birthday at rehearsal for a Rhyl institution's latest show.

Little did Elsie Morris realise when she joined Rhyl & District Amateur Operatic Society (RDAOS) in 1980 that she would still be tripping the light fantastic 39 years later.

The seasoned veteran - a former hotelier in Rhyl - has been hard at work as part of the chorus for the group's upcoming production Little Shop of Horrors, spending her 90th birthday with her cast mates on Tuesday October 22.

Elsie, who first performed in the groups production of Call Me Madam, said: "I've been in 60 odd shows over the years, and had principal roles in a lot of them, but it's the friendliness of the group that keeps me coming back. The younger members don't treat me like a old person at all.

"Every year I say "This is my last show" but I'm always in the next one.

"I just like to ge tout there and perform, i think it's definitely my secret for keeping youthful."

On Saturday 26, Elsie had a proper birthday bash at the Oriel House in St Asaph, where more than 100 people turned up included members of her choir, the Rhuddlan based Aquire, and the (RDAOS), who performed some musical numbers.

Over the years, Elsie has seen a change in the name of the society to Rhyl & District Musical Theatre Company and also a change in the kind of musicals now performed as opposed to operettas of yesteryear.

She was made a ‘Life Member’ in 2015 as she has played a major role in the history of the society, having been a Committee member and stalwart cast member, and has missed just seven shows out of her 39 years.

A spokesperson for the (RDAOS) said: "Her photo belies her age and she is definitely 90 years young.

"She admits that she has been blessed with good health, but the comradery within the group keeps her young. She is popular with all age groups and is Nan, mum, aunt and sister to everyone."

Elsie can be seen on stage from Wednesday, November 20 until Saturday 23 in Little Shop of Horrors at Rhyl Little Theatre at 7.30pm, with an additional matinee showing on Saturday at 2.30pm.

Evening show tickets are £12, and Saturday matinee tickets are £6. To book call the box office on 0333 666 3366 or visit rhylmusicaltheatre.co.uk
