The first ever Pride Powys event will take place in Llandrindod Wells at the end of June, it has been announced.

LGBTQ+ pride parades and events celebrate and fight for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people.

The idea for a pride event in Llandrindod Wells came from Shaun Griffiths, the LGBTQ+ support worker at Mid Powys Mind. After a Facebook post received an overwhelming response, with many people wanting to get involved, a meeting was set up.

Now, a date for Pride Powys has been set for Saturday, June 27, 2020.

Opening the meeting in September, Shaun introduced himself and talked about the recent hate crime figures against LGBTQ+ people and the reasons why having a visible Pride presence in Llandrindod Wells would be important.

He talked about his vision for the Pride event; making it family friendly and accessible during the day, with a more party atmosphere in the evening.

Initially, the plans were for a Llandrindod Pride event. However, it was decided at the meeting that the event should be for the whole county.

A spokesperson said: “The group felt it was important to be inclusive of the whole of Powys due to the lack of LGBTQ+ awarenesses and services across Powys.”

Despite the event being for people in Powys as a whole, the group at the meeting thought it was important to keep the event based in or around one location to keep the audience. And that the site should be Llandrindod, because of its central location and the local support it offers to members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Possible locations in Llandrindod, the style of event, support from local organisations, health and safety and fundraising were also discussed at the meeting.
