PATAGONIA has influenced the cushion on the Clwyd Young Farmers Eisteddfod Chair.

The Clwyd Young Farmers Eisteddfod will take place at Denbigh Town Hall this Saturday, October 2 (3pm).

The chair this year has been sponsored by Erfyl and Sioned Jones, who are exmembers of the Nantglyn Young Farmers Club. Erfyl said: “The Young Farmers club is very close to our hearts, both Sioned and myself have achieved so much by being members and have had numerous opportunities to compete and learn and it is a privilege to be able to sponsor the chair for this year’s Eisteddfod."

The chair will have a cushion which has been designed by Cefyn Burgess and it has been based on the Shadows of the Prairie in Patagonia.

Between Trelew and Esquel travelling across the prairie on a bright sunny day with a stark blue sky, the rows of tall plain trees and black egged willows cast their defined shadows on to the dirt tracks creating rhythms of patterns disappearing to the vanishing point.

The shadows of the man made fences suspended along the boundaries of the farms cutting into the round shapes of the rows of hay bales also add to the shadow patterns cast on to the dry soil by the bright sun.

These rhythms and shadows are captured in strong contrasting defined geometric designs woven in natural black and white wool.

The Patagonia “Cysgodion y Paith” collection of Welsh tapestry blankets and throws echo the skill of the Mapuche people to interpret their environment and landscape in woven line and shape, and to patters a fusion of two traditions of weaving wool.

The chair this year will be awarded to the best piece of prose or poem chosen by the adjudicator Sian Alwen.
