The top price at £1,000 was for a lovely coloured cob mare with an 18 year old show jumper gelding reaching £640.

Shetlands sold to £500. Donkeys sold to £290.

A cremello Welsh Section A colt foal sold for £110.

MESSRS Morgan Evans & Co report an entry of 410 suckling calves in the opening sale of the season.

Excellent calves were shown forward this year and were judged by Clwyd Jones, Model Farm, Penyffordd, Chester.

The prizes were dominated by Messrs Hughes, Fferm Gyd,

Llanbabo with the show champion awarded to a 6 month old Limousin male calf which later sold for £870 and was bought by the judge himself.

Mold primestock sale - October 14

BEEF trade was slightly improved on the week due to lower numbers.

Cows met more resistance with prices down, with reports of large numbers nationwide.

There was a steady trade on lambs.

It was pleasing to see more ewes about, which were met with a good trade.

Store cattle trade remained steady with a keen demand for younger types.

OTMs were solid and an increased entry of cows and calves sold to a steady trade.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of eight cows and calves to £1,220; 273 store cattle to £1,100; 78 calves to £355; 26 OTM cattle to £1,132.85; 1,194 store lambs to £70; 845 breeding ewe lambs to £106; 901 breeding ewes to £170 and 209 breeding rams to 450gns.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

The calves keep coming in, with 78 at the sale.

An entry of a 2–and–a–half month Limousin heifer calf to £365 selling to Anglesey.

The same holding had one–and–a–half month Limousin bull calf selling for £280.

A new recently new vendor and returning again and had a consignment of 9 British Blue and Friesian bull calfs.

His 1 month old British Blue calf achieved £305 with a Friesian bull calf at £40.

A Conwy vendor with a 2 week old Limousin calf sold for £220.

A consignment of 6 Limousin and British Blue from Llannefydd sold for between £205 and £260, going to purchasers dotted across North Wales.

All calves were sold and vendors went away with payment on the day.

More calves could have been sold with buyers looking for more on a weekly basis.

Generally, cattle were more difficult to sell along with national trends, but there was a good trade on the strong types.

It was the Tal y Bont section which took the highest price honour from the multibreed entry with a Shearling rams from Cae’r Weirglodd achieving 900gns, with the same vendor also receiving 600gns, 620gns, 740gns and 880gns with a very good trade for the Tal y Bont breed.

Store lambs: The store lambs section topped at £71 for a pen of 8 Texel x lambs from Holywell, who also had a pen achieve £69.

Suffolk rams lambs to £62; Other Texel ewe lambs achieved £66; Mule rams lambs £54.50; Mule lambs £61; Cheviot ram lambs to £60; Beulah to £4; Welsh to £45.

Breeding ewe lambs:

Another full house, with 845 forward again during the week.

They remained in very keen demand with the 3rd consignment of Texel x ewe lambs in consecutive weeks from Penrhewl topping at £113.

Cheviot ewe lambs to £62; Tal y Bont ewe lambs to £58; Welsh to £62. The overall average of all breeds was £72.25 with a very good clearance.

Breeding ewes:

The breeding ewes section has been busy throughout the season and equally a very brisk trade.

The demand remains as buyers look for all breeds.

A pen of 3 and 4 year old Lleyn ewes sold for £94.

A consignment of Texel yearlings from Llangollen topped at £130.

Beltex shearlings sold for £100. A trailer full of Tal y Bont shearling ewes were in very keen demand and eventually sold for £132.

Welsh ewes to £74. Welsh 4 year old ewes sold for £68 and Welsh full mouth to £52. Texel full mouth to £102.

NEW season lambs (2,413):

A smaller show of lambs was met with a very sharp trade, with all types well up on the early part of the week.

A GOOD show of 454 stores was in attendance.

Trade seemed to firm against previous weeks and stores seemed well sold considering the current beef market.

Dairy cows and heifers were in demand again, with buyers going home empty handed.

Calves were still hard to place, although demand for stronger calves seemed to improve.
