DENBIGHSHIRE swimmers have shown their steel to bring home a trophy from Sheffield... again!

Last month, a team of swimmers from Denbighshire competed in the 39th Robin Hood Open meet in Sheffield, and for the second year in a row, they came home with the top team trophy.

The swimmers represented the Denbighshire Development Team (DDT), coming together from Denbigh Dragons (31 swimmers), Rhyl Dolphins (six swimmers) and Ruthin Rays (11 swimmers).

They competed against swimmers from clubs up and down Britain. The long course meet was arranged by Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club, and races took place in the Pond’s Forge International 50m pool.

Denbighshire swimmers won 28 gold medals, 22 silver and 19 bronze, with a raft of impressive performances thrusting many swimmers into the top-five in Wales, with a few swims registering in the top one and two in Britain.

Lewis Jones had an exceptional meet, scoring sufficient points with his combined performances to win the overall top boy prize.

Millie Hannant and Phoebe Derbyshire were also outstanding, coming third and fourth respectively in the female category.

This meet was an excellent bonding experience for swimmers, coaches, officials and parents from the Denbigh, Ruthin and Rhyl swimming clubs, and further evidence of the wealth of swimming talent in the county.

The DDT is continuing to achieve great success and this without a performance set up or funding.

Head coach Justin Jones hailed the “fantastic performance” of the team, particularly at such an early stage in the season, and is keen to return to Sheffield next year, and make it a hat-trick of wins.
