DESIGNS for a new £1.2million community learning hub that will offer Welsh language lessons to families have been revealed.

The two-storey complex at Coleg Cambria’s Llysfasi campus, which currently specialises in agricultural studies at A level and higher education, will open the site to provide nearby communities with ICT and multimedia facilities as well as evening classes, workshops and meeting rooms.

There are a number of rural communities surrounding Llysfasi, situated between Ruthin and Corwen, which do not have easy access to a public library. The hub development, funded by the Welsh Government as part of its Prosperity for All programme to improve educational resources in towns and rural areas, will also include classrooms, breakout spaces, a kitchen, offices and meeting rooms.

Work is expected to begin at the Ruthin Road campus in 2020.

David Jones, chief executive of Coleg Cambria, which also has a site in Deeside, said: “This hub will deliver a lot of the services and resources that are essential for rural growth, as well as learning, so we see it as being of huge benefit to our Llysfasi site and local communities.

“The centre will support communities in north east Wales and have a broader geographical reach for some specialist provision, making education more accessible in more rural areas.

“It will be a functional, cutting-edge facility the people of Denbighshire and surrounding areas can be proud of.”

Mr Jones added that the college has partnered with the Welsh Government and Denbighshire County Council to support businesses by providing training and skills development in ICT, business, marketing and farm diversification.

Hugh Evans, leader of Denbighshire County Council, said: “Llysfasi has a long and proud history of supporting rural and other local communities in the Vale of Clwyd and the broader agricultural sector in north and mid-Wales. This new project will support further development and the realisation of the ambitious longer-term plans for Llysfasi.”
