WETHERSPOON have entered the legal process to buy a site in Prestatyn.

Eddie Gershon, spokesman for J D Wetherspoon, said the company is in ‘legals’ to purchase the Council Chamber, Municipal offices, on 6/8 Nant Hall Road.

Late last year, the Journal reported that Prestatyn Town councillor had met for the last time on Wednesday, December 12 after being told there would soon be no room for them after Denbighshire County Council declared the building “surplus to requirements” and would be sold.

The building has been used by councillors and public services for more than 100 years.

Cllr Anton Sampson, ward councillor, said: "Whilst I welcome larger businesses into out town, I am aware of the potential impact it could have on independent traders.

"With Wetherspoon offering much needed accommodation, I am hoping that it will attract more people into our town thus utilising our existing facilities which in turn, makes Prestatyn a destination where visitors want stay for longer."

Over the years, the building had become an attraction for visitors and groups, many who had visited the chamber and mayors parlour and signed the visitors book which was first signed by HRH Prince Charles in 1969.

Wetherspoon have also expressed interest in the Civic Hall in Conwy.

Mr Gershon added: "Offers are being invited and Wetherspoon might bid for the building."
