A POPULAR nightclub has revealed it will be closing it doors next month.

Fusion, on West Parade in Rhyl, will host it last party weekend on Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14.

The closure comes after Denbighshire County Council purchased the building as part of Rhyl's regeneration scheme.

Over the years, the club has been known by many names including Kings, Nutz, Frankies, C-jays, Scruples, Zinc, Vanilla Lounge and Zubar.

Speaking to the Journal, Gwil Richie, owner of Fusion, said: "On the whole, it will be a big loss. I have been at Fusion since 2008 and I bought it about five years ago.

"We have had some great artists over the years and some exceptional nights but there has also been lows such as break ins and when I got attacked outside my home.

"We have had the likes of DJ Anton Powers, Ian Redman, DJ Kuta and Sweet Female Attitude."

Mr Richie said the team have had their suspicions for about 10 years that Denbighshire County Council might snap up the building.

He added: "It is April this year we got told they had bought it.

"I was quite sad initially. It has been a large part of my life. Times have changed and kids don't seem to be going out so much anymore.

"Mobile phones have had a big impact. People can socialise from home, they don't need to go out. Social media has resulted in a big hit. When I was 18, you would go out to meet friends but how to be social has changed."

Mr Richie fortunately has another business that he can put his full energies into once Fusion closes.

The final celebration event will be a black and white theme event.

"It is the last iconic night club really to close in the town," he added.

"We've have good, bad, mixed comments about the closure.

"We hope everyone will come to the closing party - it is a chance to relive the good times and their youth.

"We would like to thank the staff for their hard work over the years."

A spokesperson from Denbighshire County Council said: "This site forms part of the Queen’s Building development in Rhyl and conversations with tenants are continuing, but it would not be appropriate to comment on individual cases.”
