THOSE heading to the Rhyl Air Show this weekend are being encouraged to leave their car at home this year.

With thousands expected to attend the event on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday 25, Denbighshire County Council (DCC) and North Wales Police are urging residents to walk or use public transport when attending the event at the Events Arena to help ease traffic.

The annual free event, organised by DCC, in partnership with Rhyl Town Council will this year feature a variety of displays including an RAF Eurofighter Typhoon, a Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane as well as Team Raven, a formation aerobatic display.

Cllr Hugh Evan, leader of DCC, said: “Attendees are being urged to use public transport, or for those living in or around Rhyl, to walk or cycle to the event to reduce the amount of traffic on the roads.

“Those travelling by car are being advised to arrive early to secure parking close to the event, which starts at 1.20pm with ground activities starting from 11am.

“With so much on offer in Rhyl, I would encourage attendees to visit the town’s businesses, there is plenty to see and do, including after Rhyl Air Show finishes.”

Rhyl Central Car Park will be closed to traffic entering or leaving between 5pm and 6pm on both days due to a road closure which will be in place on the promenade between the top of Water Street to the top of Fairfield Avenue.

Park and walk car parks will be in operation at the Nova in Prestatyn.

Supt Jane Banham said: “With such large numbers of people coming to town it is important event goers, motorists, shoppers and residents are aware of the traffic arrangements drawn up by the organisers and the Council to avoid congestion and disruption.

“Please follow any safety advice given by event stewards and Police so we can help everyone enjoy and have a great weekend.

“We are also urging people to ensure vehicles are locked and secure and we are reminding them to remove any items of value or to keep them out of sight when vehicles are left unattended.”
