A HOUSE fire in Kinmel Bay which left a man and his dog suffering light smoke inhalation has prompted tumble-dryer fire safety advice.

Two fire appliances from Rhyl were called to the blaze in a dryer at Llys Cynffig, at 17.15pm, on Sunday.

Fire crews used two sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets, to put out the flames which were confined to a ground floor kitchen area.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue service said:

"The male occupier, in his 40s, and a dog, received light smoke inhalation. An ambulance was not required, although the man was to self-present at hospital for a check.

"The dryer was 100 percent damaged, and there was 75 percent damage to the kitchen. The incident was over by 5.45pm."

The fire has prompted a reminder of household white good safety

The spokesperson added: "Our website includes lots of advice, tips and safety steps to help people stay safe with regard to tumble dryers and white goods. There is also a reminder of a tumble dryer recall."

Tips include: Don’t overload plug sockets - the high wattage for a tumble dryer means that it needs its own 13-amp socket.

Keep an eye out for any scorching or burn marks, including checking any visible electrical wires.

Don't leave appliances unattended – don't turn the tumble dryer on before you leave the house or go to bed.

Tumble dryers contain powerful motors with fast moving parts that can get very hot.

Keep your dryer well ventilated, make sure the vent pipe is kink free and not blocked or crushed in any way.

Always clean out the filter after using your tumble dryer. Always allow each drying programme, including the 'cool down cycle', to complete fully before emptying the machine. If you stop the machine mid cycle, the clothing will still be hot.

Don’t ignore the warning signs – if you can smell burning or clothes feel hotter at the end of the cycle, stop using your appliance and have it checked out by a professional.

'White goods' refers to household electrical appliances, such as tumble dryers, washing machines, dishwashers or fridge/freezers.

The website also has advice on the recall of Whirlpool, Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan or Proline, models made between 2004 and 2015. Contact the helpline on 0800 151 0905. If anyone has a recalled model, unplug and do not use.
