A 57-year-old man was jailed for six months on Friday after police called to a Rhyl street found him drunk and a kitchen knife in his carrier bag.

David Coriat, of no fixed address, admitted possessing a bladed article in Rhydwen Drive on June 23 and had committed similar offences previously.

Defence barrister Matthew Curtis told Caernarfon crown court that Coriat was an experienced chef but had been in the Ablett psychiatric unit.

Alcohol appeared to have been a long-standing problem and he relapsed.

“He’s determined to stay off the drink and return to a prosocial life once he’s released,” the barrister declared.

Judge Huw Rees said Coriat had been throwing garden furniture and then insulted police in earshot of children.

He said the jail sentence would allow him “a period of contemplation”.
