A ROBBER who kicked a security guard at a Rhyl supermarket has been jailed for 16 months.

Jason Stokes, 20, was part of a four-man gang who went on a shoplifting spree at Sainsburys and Morrisons in Rhyl on February 7 last year.

Stokes was with his brothers, Patrick, John and Tony – who have all previously received custodial sentences – when he went into Sainsburys’ and stole £618 worth of goods, including baby milk before moving on to the town’s branch of Morrisons.

There a staff member tried to stop them, but Jason Stokes pushed him out of the way before a security guard got involved.

CCTV footage captured the violence as the men were apprehended.

“Jason Stokes is seen to push the security guard and make off with the trolley,” said prosecuting barrister Karl Scholz.

The footage also showed Patrick Stokes in a struggle with the store manager whom he punched in the face and then kicked while he was on the floor.

Mr Scholz added: “The security guard received three kicks to his lower back and the CCTV footage shows that it was Jason Stoke who delivered these kicks.”

The gang had loaded up £465 worth of goods at Morrisons before they were confronted.

Jason Stokes, 20, of Gypsy Lane Caravan Park in Northamptonshire pleaded guilty to charges of robbery at Morrisons in Rhyl and theft at Sainsburys in Rhyl on February 7 last year.

Defence counsel Kyra Badman said that Stokes suffered from learning difficulties.

Judge Niclas Parry said Stokes would have to serve his sentence consecutively to the one of 14-months imposed for theft offences at Oxford Crown Court earlier this year.

He told him: “It was a pre-meditated and you were in a gang. There was an attack on a public servant and you kicked out at least once.”
