THE funeral of the 17-year-old girl killed in last Thursday’s horrifying crash has been held.

Olivia Alkir, who came from the Efenechtyd area, had been appointed deputy head girl at Ysgol Brynhyfryd and was excited about going to university to study architectural engineering.

The crash on Thursday, June 27 involved two cars – a red coloured Ford Fiesta and a black coloured C Class Mercedes. It happened on the B5105 between Efenechtyd and Ruthin at about 7.30pm.

Olivia, the rear passenger in the Ford Fiesta, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three other occupants of the Fiesta – a male driver, 17, and two female passengers, aged 16 and 17, were airlifted to hospital in Stoke with serious injuries.

The male driver, 52, and female passenger, 76, from the Mercedes were taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

A multi-faith funeral was conducted in the village’s churchyard on Sunday.

Cllr Gavin Harris, mayor of Ruthin, who attended, described the service as “very moving”.

“It had elements from Christian and Muslim faiths which was very moving and reflected the heritage and cultures of all her family,” he said.

"Nothing will match the dignity, respect and emotion shown by the Ruthin and Efenechtyd community at the funeral for Olivia Alkir.

"Amazingly brave parents and family supported by hundreds of Olivia’s friends, fellow students and acquaintances - who as young adults showed maturity beyond their years."

Olivia, who worked as a lifeguard, was described by her family as kind and thoughtful.

The family added: “She was a natural ‘water baby’ having spent her summers in her father’s native Turkey where she would spend the days swimming in the sea. Olivia was beautiful inside and out and the world was a better place because of her.”

Floral tributes and messages have been left at the roadside near to the crash site.

In statement, the family of Olivia said: “Olivia was a fun loving, wise, ambitious individual. She was loved by all who knew her.

“Olivia was kind, thoughtful and excited by the prospect of going to university to study architectural engineering.

“She had a uniquely unbreakable bond with her adoring parents and was cherished by her cousins, friends, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

“Although her life has been cut tragically short, she filled her seventeen years with a life-time of achievements.”
