REPRESENTATIVES of the Vale of Clwyd caught up with Boris Johnson during his leadership race.

Former Vale of Clwyd MP James Davies was among those meeting the Tory leadership candidate during an event at hotel near Chirk - between Gobowen and Ruabon. Mr Johnson was in the area for a speech and Q&A session which had been organised by the Back Boris campaign team in conjunction with David Jones, Clwyd West MP.

Mr Davies, of Prestatyn, attended alongside former Prestatyn mayor cllr Anton Sampson, cllr Gareth Smith, deputy mayor of Rhuddlan and young conservative members Jacob Evans, of Rhyl, and Amy Martin, of Rhuddlan.

The former Mayor of London took numerous questions, including one from Prestatyn GP Dr Nitin Shori who asked about the future of the NHS.

Mr Davies said: "I'm backing Boris above all because I'm concerned about the lack of trust in democracy that failure to deliver on the 2016 referendum has brought about.

"I think he is best placed to turn around the difficult situation the country now faces. I also believe him to be a centre-ground 'One Nation' Conservative who can deliver for the UK in general, in the way he did for London as Mayor.

"He was full of energy and enthusiasm. He talked of his pledge to increase funding for schools and infrastructure projects."

Darren Millar, AM for Clwyd West, also met Boris at the Lion Quays Hotel in Gobowen.

Mr Millar said: “He had a fire in his belly and a message of hope on his lips. The country is in very choppy waters and I have every confidence that Boris can get us out."
