A LOCAL councillor has said he is fully behind a Welsh government scheme to make all villages 20mph driving zones.

At a community council meeting on Wednesday evening, Cllr Rob Walsh said he had major concerns, including speeding on First Avenue, which he says is back to the fore following a vehicle colliding with the rockery railings last Saturday.

Cllr Walsh said: "There have been concerns for a while about speeding on First Avenue. The speed surveys that have been done have never really produced enough evidence for us to take anything forward.

"The incident of the car going into the railings on Saturday has really re-ignited the argument that something needs to be done."

Cllr Walsh added that he would like the community council to consider the purchasing of speed signs in various locations around the village, where it was felt they would have the biggest impact, but added that he was "hopeful" a new Welsh Government initiative to increase the number of 20mph zones around Wales.

He added: "I had a call from the Vicar's wife who has told me she regularly sees drivers practically flying around the corner.

"Going forward, one thing I am aware of is the Welsh Government trying to increase the number of 20mph zones, and hopefully if that was introduced here it would mean all the avenues would be speed restricted."

Cllrs Sandra Apsley and Sharon Roberts both told of recent instances of speeding on the road, with one of the problems being the fact cars are parked on just one side of the road, making the straight geography of it, seemingly ideal for motorists driving too fast and posing a risk to others.

Cllr Walsh did deliver some good news to the monthly meeting when he revealed First Avenue soon be resurfaced as part of Wrexham councils re-surfacing programme.
