A TWO-hour charity shred event has been held at Tesco in Wrexham.

The funds raised by Wrexham Rotary Club will be donated to the Wrexham Homeless Afternoon Club.

Members of the public were encouraged to bring their personal documents to be securely shredded for a £2.50 donation (per bag).

The shredding documents such as, bank statements, utility bills and other personal papers is the safest protection against ID theft as well as other fraudulent and criminal activity.

A mobile shred truck was supplied by Topwood Ltd, who provide data destruction services to businesses and organisations across North Wales.

Documents were received by its security vetted driver who locked them into wheelie bins which were then tipped into the shredder.

Owners could watch their documents being cross cut shredded - Mary Wynne from Ruabon said that while on the lorry that she had tried to use a personal shredder but it had overheated and burnt out.

Clearing out and shredding sensitive papers is not only good protection against criminal acts it also reduces fire risk in homes and is environmentally sustainable.

All the shredded paper from the event (nearly half a tonne) was taken to Topwood's new secure storage and recycling centre on Abenbury Way, Wrexham Industrial Estate, where it was baled before being sent for recycling into useful paper products at Kimberly Clark in Flint.

Thanks to Tesco for providing the great venue and Topwood Ltd for supplying the industrial shredder.

Wrexham Rotary Club are planning to host another shred event on September 19.
