I was meeting one of my friends with our sons for a good walk - and chat - at Loggerheads Country Park.

On the way I casually asked "food now or at the end?".

Ten minutes later we pulled up in the car park of We Three Loggerheads pub/restaurant just opposite the park.

I've been many times, including for Christmas dinner on the big day itself, and it was also where me and my other half had our first date. I've never been disappointed.

It's in a great location and looks every bit the country pub inside. When you first walk in it's very cute and cries out for a cosy winter return visit. Head up a fairy light-lit stairway and you find yourself in the main restaurant. This seems cavernous compared to the low ceilings of the bar, as they've made the height of the room a feature, with big windows to match.

We got seated no problem, despite not booking - always a gamble on a Sunday lunchtime.

Now for a good look at the menu.

We were hungry, with a good walk ahead of us, so we really needed to build up our energy. So we told ourselves.

Not wanting to miss out on the break in the weather, we went straight for the mains, although the starters were tempting, with soup, meatballs and black pudding dishes catching my eye.

There were pub favourites: fish and chips (a portion of which has previously defeated me), lasagne, steak pie; alternatives: curry, salmon, seabass; and from the grill: steaks and gammon to name just a few but for me and my friend, we went for the Sunday roast, beef for her, turkey for me, although there were several other meats available.

The waitress asked if we wanted any extras - cauliflower cheese being one - but I just chose stuffing and my friend took hers as it came, which was with plenty of veg, roast and boiled potatoes and a huge Yorkshire pudding, all with lashings of gravy of course.

It was all just as it should be, and more than enough.

My son, the burger king, went for the Loggerheads tower burger with chips, which also featured two enormous onion rings. My friend's son chose from the children's menu, which featured all the usual suspects but also included lasagne, fish pie and chilli, with a few veggie options too. Certainly plenty to choose from even the pickiest of eaters.

On this day though, it was sausages, chips and beans that won - mash and peas are also available. It was a decent sized portion too, noticeably better than what a lot of places serve up for the kids.

We all barely looked up from our plates as we devoured the lot, Sundays really are perfect for a good feed. Full bellies, we didn't even attempt a look at dessert on this occasion! Four happy campers for sure.

We Three Loggerheads really know how to satisfy every appetite, also offering bar meals of jacket spuds, sandwiches, lighter bites, and even their fabulous chip menu, if a full dinner isn't for you.

As we headed off for our walk, we didn't quite go at the pace we'd planned but one thing's for sure, we certainly weren't hungry any more.
