YNYS Mon’s inter games football tournament organising committee has announced that Sport Wales has agreed to become an official supporter of the event.

Sixteen teams from across the globe are set to descend upon Anglesey from June 15-22 to contest the competition that is being held on Anglesey for the first time ever, with men's and women’s fixtures being held at 11 venues across the island.

The 2019 tournament offers the Ynys Mon Island Games Association an opportunity to showcase what they can do as they bid to host the International Island Games in 2025, and it would be the first time that Anglesey would host the “mini Olympics” if their ambitious bid is successful.

This is the latest exciting development for the tournament, which confirmed leading building supplier Huws Gray as its official sponsor last week.

Jamie Thomas, Huws Gray Ynys Mon 2019 communications manager, said: “Announcing the support of Sport Wales is very exciting for everyone involved in the Huws Gray Ynys Mon Inter Games Tournament and we’re delighted to have their support.

“We’ve always said that our primary aim of the tournament is to ensure there is a positive, lasting legacy from the competition leading to increased participation in sports and encouraging people of all ages across the island to live more healthy and active lifestyles.

“There are a lot of exciting announcements to come as the tournament nears in terms of events and activities we have planned to achieve that vision, and to be able to secure Sport Wales as a supporter to accompany us on that journey is a strong endorsement of the plans we have in place for this tournament.

“Developing an Ynys Mon Football Academy from the tournament has been central to our plans for the tournament from the beginning, and good progress is being made there.

“During the week of the tournament we will have a number of bespoke events taking place across the island to help increase participation for people of all ages and skill levels to come out and enjoy being active through football.”
