CONWY left it late to extend their unbeaten start to the North Wales Cricket League Division One season with a four-wicket victory at Mold.

The promotion hopefuls made it four wins from their opening five contests, leaving them with a 100 per cent record in their games that avoided cancellation.

Graham Meredith got them off to a strong start in the field with the wickets of opening pair Richard Crane (2) and Wes Gillam (2), and the same bowler also took out Kieron Coppack for 28 late on at a critical time on his way to figures of 3-57.

A number of home batsmen made promising starts but were unable to build on them, with Gareth Thomas producing a fine spell to remove Duane Williams (20), Thomas North (21) and Isaac Allen (12) to secure 3-45, but a 39 not out knock from Richard Deniz enabled Mold to set a target of 201-9 from their allotted 50 overs.

Things did not go according to plan for the visitors at the crease when skipper Shaun Davies was removed for 11, and he was followed to the pavilion by Philip Davies (10) Evan Williams (9) and Jonathan Davies (5) who all failed to contribute significantly to the scoreboard.

Gareth Thomas improved his side’s fortunes before he was clean bowled by Wes Gilam on 36, and opener Danny Davies turned in another standout effort on his way to 99.

He was run out by George Deniz with the away side requiring just two for victory, and Llewelyn Cowell held his nerve in the dying stages to secure the win with four overs remaining on his way to 13 not out.

Conwy face the sternest of their credential to date this Saturday when they travel to early table-toppers Dolgellau.
