COLWYN Bay picked up their first cup triumph of the season in their six-wicket success at Southport and Birkdale.

The Penrhyn Avenue side produced a polished display on their travels to advance to the Ray Digman Cup third round, and they will look to continue this momentum into their Liverpool and District Competition Premier Division outing at Bootle on Saturday.

Ryan Holtby got the away side off to a flyer with the new ball by removing opener Adam Phillips for one, with overseas star Saliya Saman taking the prized scalp of Issac Lea for eight.

Wicketkeeper Bradley Yates was the next to fall when he was caught off an Adam Campion delivery for 22, and the same bowler also sent Adam Galley (0) back to the pavilion to finish the day with figures of 2-24.

The home resistance came from Will Affleck, who made 42 off 78 deliveries before falling to a Paul Jenkins strike, with the veteran spinner taking his tally to 2-29 with the wicket of Jack Baybutt (8).

Another contributor with the ball was George Johansen, who disposed of Angus Galley (5) and Tom Baybutt (32) as the hosts set a target of 171-8 from their allotted 45 overs.

Things got off to a promising start in the middle for the Bay, with skipper Sion Morris and Will Higginson making 20 and 21 respectively.

Johansen managed to seal a double-figure score with 13, and opener Campion produced the knock of the day before he was eventually dismissed on 57.

This was aided at the other end by Mike Littler, who smashed six boundaries on his way to an unbeaten innings of 43 from 32 balls as the visitors reached their required total with minimal fuss after just 28 overs at the crease.

Their reward is a home tie against New Brighton Villa on Sunday.
